What you need to know about the requirements of international maritime authorities (NMA, MCA, USCG).

For seafarers meeting standard health conditions, the NMA and ENG1 medical certificates are valid for a maximum of 2 years (24 months). For seafarers under 18, this period is set at 1 year. Special age-related guidelines apply to coastal waters (ML5) certificates.

In accordance with the guidelines of international authorities, you are required to bring the following to your appointment:
  • Valid passport or Seaman's Book
  • Your previous seafarer medical report, if any
  • Your prescription glasses or contact lenses
  • Medical reports of your regular medications or recent surgeries

Wearing glasses or contact lenses does not prevent you from getting a certificate; however, this is noted on your certificate as "Fit with visual aids". Especially for Deck personnel, being able to distinguish navigation lights is vital, so color blindness (Ishihara) tests are applied with zero tolerance.
